Blog - Planting season August
The sun was high above the hills as we planted the first seedlings. We planted 3,600 plants on three hectares of land—an average of 1,200 plants per hectare. Each one contributes to restoring the ecosystem and supporting the forest in all its diversity.
Costa Rica was once completely covered in dense forests. But by the 1970s and 1980s, only about 30% of the original forest area remained. Intensive agriculture and livestock farming had cleared large areas.
Today the country shows how reforestation can succeed:
-
Over 52% of the country’s area is now forested again.
-
The country is home to around 5% of the world’s biodiversity – in an area of just 51,100 km².
-
Thousands of hectares are replanted each year in reforestation projects, with more than 50 million trees planted since the programs began.
Our work on three hectares is a small but important part of this movement. The density of 1,200 plants per hectare meets standard reforestation guidelines to create a stable, resilient forest. In just a few years, these plants will provide shade, protect the soil, and provide habitat for birds, insects, and mammals.
Reforestation in Costa Rica isn't just an environmental measure. It also supports the local population: water sources are protected, soils are stabilized, and new jobs are created in sustainable forestry and ecotourism. Every tree planted therefore benefits both nature and people.
Our 3,600 plants are a small step in a grand story—the story of Costa Rica's return to its roots, to its forests, to its biodiversity. And with every seedling, a piece of this green success story continues to grow.
